Electricity theft worth Rs 706 crore caught in 5 years and Rs 378 crore deposited - PC Meena
Theft of electricity is a legal offense; there is a provision of fine and punishment
Gurugram, September 13 : Managing Director of Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam PC Meena said that in the last 5 years, electricity theft worth Rs 706.82 crore has been caught and 378.33 crore rupees have been deposited by the consumers who are stealing electricity. He informed that in the current financial year 2022-23 till last month, electricity theft worth Rs.51.21 crore has been caught and Rs.31.22 crore fine has been collected. The meters of 61649 consumers were checked by DHBVN joint checking team, out of which 13242 were caught stealing electricity.
DHBVN has reduced Technical and Distribution losses significantly by technological intervention & theft detections. DHBVN is adopting multipronged approach to curb T&D losses which includes. Technical augmentation of the existing distribution network, increasing HT to LT ratio to reduce technical losses, discouraging theft by increasing HT lines and Intensive and targeted theft detection program on high loss feeders.
The Managing Director said that in the last year 2021-22, electricity theft has been caught worth Rs 156.65 crore and a fine of Rs 78.70 crore has been collected. This year, the meters of 181078 consumers were checked by the joint checking team of the discom, out of which 45470 were caught stealing electricity. The 42501 FIR has been lodged against the theft cases.
In the last year 2020-21, electricity theft worth Rs 163.66 crore has been caught and a fine of Rs 85.83 crore has been collected. This year, the meters of 146645 consumers were checked by the joint checking team of the Nigam, out of which 48791 cases have been caught. The 43716 FIR has been lodged against the theft cases.
In the year 2019-20, electricity theft worth Rs 82.29 crore has been caught and a fine of Rs 54.04 crore has been collected. This year, the meters of 99458 consumers have been checked by the joint checking team of the discom, out of which 26369 were caught. The 20267 FIR has been lodged against the theft cases.
In the year 2018-19, electricity theft worth Rs 86.24 crore has been caught and a fine of Rs 45.11 crore has been collected. This year, the meters of 72690 consumers have been checked by the joint checking team, out of which 19868 were caught. The 15498 FIR has been lodged against the theft cases.
In the year 2017-18, electricity theft worth Rs 166.74 crore has been caught and a fine of Rs 86.40 crore has been collected. This year, the meters of 118900 consumers have been checked by the joint checking team, out of which 56127 were caught. The 40412 FIR has been lodged against the theft cases.
Sh. Meena said that Police and legal action is being taken against those consumers who have not deposited the outstanding fine for electricity theft. He said that electricity theft is a legal offense. There is a provision of fine and punishment for theft of electricity. DHBVN has launched a XYZ portal and having reward money for informers.
