DCP South Ms. Upasana Singh, IPS as part of Cyber Awareness month drive cautioned the public regarding new E-shopping scam which has risen over past few weeks. She informed that cyber criminals have adopted a new modus operandi under which in name of heavy discounts on several daily use products like household items, electronic products, medicines etc. cyber criminals have gained access to the bank accounts of the victims and have frauded large amounts from their respective accounts. Cyber criminals generally advertise such products through SMS/online pop-up ads. On clicking on such links, they are redirected to a phishing website.
They generally are selling such products on fake websites which adopts pseudonyms similar to famous e-commerce websites like Flipkart, Myntra, amazon. Briefing about the remedial measures, DCP South cautioned the public regarding clicking on such pop-up ads/SMS on social media sites. Also, in case a person come across or is victim of such fraud, he/she needs to report the same on national cyber helpline number 1930 immediately or lodge the complaint on cybercrime.gov.in or at nearest Police Station.
