GMDA Identifies Major City Roads for Development as Model Roads for Traffic Management

-Collaboration with Gurugram Traffic Police to create awareness among commuters

-Efforts to inculcate a safe traffic culture and driving discipline across the city

-Focus on strengthening lane driving discipline and ensuring safe movement at pedestrian crossings

-Optimal utilisation of GMDA-developed infrastructure for maximum public benefit

-Comprehensive road safety features, including lane markings, pedestrian crossings, and signal optimisation across all model roads*

-E-challans through CCTV surveillance to curb traffic violations and accidents

-Phase-I implementation to be scaled up citywide under Phase-II

Gurugram, 7 January: In a decisive move to improve urban mobility, road safety and ensure effective utilisation of public infrastructure, the Chief Executive Officer of Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Shri P.C. Meena, today chaired a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Shri Rajesh Mohan, along with the Infra-1 and Mobility divisions of GMDA to plan the development of select city roads as model roads.

The primary objective of this initiative is to ensure optimal utilisation of road infrastructure developed by GMDA for public benefit, while inculcating a safe traffic culture and driving discipline among commuters in Gurugram. The roads identified for development as model roads are those where GMDA’s infrastructure works have already been completed or are at an advanced stage of completion, enabling faster and more effective implementation of traffic management, road safety, and enforcement measures. Improved traffic management, stronger enforcement, enhanced safety features and increased commuter awareness will together contribute to safer more efficient and disciplined road usage.

After detailed discussions, several major road stretches were identified for development as model roads under Phase-I. These include MG Road from Iffco Chowk to Golf Course Road, Hamilton Court Road, Vyapar Kendra Road, Atul Kataria Chowk to Sector-29, Rajeev Chowk to Mayfield Garden (Medanta Road), Hero Honda Chowk to Sector-29, Sector-4/7 dividing road up to Sector-9/9A, and the Rampura Chowk–Pataudi Road.

Speaking on the initiative, CEO GMDA Shri P.C. Meena said, “Our focus is on ensuring disciplined traffic movement, pedestrian safety, safer roads and improved urban mobility for all. By optimising the use of existing infrastructure and strengthening safety and enforcement measures, we aim to inculcate a safe traffic culture and driving discipline, while setting new benchmarks in traffic management and commuter behaviour across the city.”

The development of these model roads will involve a comprehensive set of interventions to improve both vehicular and pedestrian movement. All essential road safety features will be provided, including clear lane markings to encourage lane driving, properly demarcated pedestrian crossings, optimisation of traffic signals and installation of pedestrian traffic signals at appropriate locations to ensure safe and regulated crossing for both vehicular owners and pedestrians.

To facilitate smoother vehicular movement, service roads along these corridors will be made fully functional, thereby reducing pressure on the main carriageways. Action will also be taken to address illegal parking and remove encroachments to ensure uninterrupted movement and disciplined road usage.

The initiative also includes installation of informatory and digital road signages for better visibility and real-time information, provision of road safety furniture such as bollards, safety barriers and road studs, and ensuring functional street lighting to improve night-time visibility. Public announcement systems will also be installed to support traffic regulation, commuter awareness, and emergency communication.

To strengthen enforcement and curb traffic violations, CCTV cameras will be deployed along these model roads for surveillance and detection of violations. E-challans will be issued through CCTV-based systems only, and no roadside challaning practice will be followed. This technology-driven approach aims to reduce violations, curb accidents and minimise disruptions to traffic flow.

CEO GMDA directed the concerned teams to finalise the scope of work within stipulated timelines and ensure close coordination with Gurugram Traffic Police so that these model roads emerge as benchmarks for safe, efficient, and pedestrian-friendly urban road infrastructure. He further stated that following successful implementation of Phase-I, the initiative will be amplified under Phase-II with identification and development of additional key corridors across the city.
